Bobble Owl-free pattern

Bobble Owl

By Caroline Chrisco

Materials:
WW yarn
G hook
2 small buttons for eyes
Felt
Embroidery needle and floss
Polyester stuffing
Special Stitches:

Beginning Bobble(BB) chain 3, then 3 dc in selected stitch, next remove hook from loop of last completed dc, insert hook through the 3rd chain of beginning chain 3, catch the loop you just dropped and slip stitch through that chain of beginning chain 3; chain 1

Make Bobble(MB) 4 dc in designated stitch; next remove hook from loop of last completed dc, insert hook through top of first completed dc, slip stitch through that dc; chain 1.
To begin: Chain 11

Round 1- Beginning Bobble, then *skip a chain, next Make Bobble* Repeat between* three more times; finally 2 MB in last chain. Continuing down the opposite side of your starting chain MB in the first skipped chain 1 space. Repeat MB 2 more times using the skipped chains( so the bobbled are falling in between the previously made bobbles.) MB in the same space as your BB. Slip stitch the last bobble to the chain one of BB (10 bobbles total)

Round 2- BB(all in same stitch) MB in every chain 1 space around, slip stitch last bobble to BB chain 1 space.

Round 3-5 repeat round 2

Round 6- BB then slip stitch on top of next 4 bobbles MB, then slip stich 1 bobble; MB then slip stitch next 4 bobbles, MB, Fasten off.
Finishing: Select two appropriately sized buttons or safety eyes. Cut felt into circle shapes for around the eyes. Using embroidery thread, attach felt squares onto owl, then buttons. For the beak, I like to use yarn because it’s a little more substantial then floss and gives me a good, strong feature. I just whip-stitch a triangle shape. Wings are also an option, I usually just make a basic shell shape( Chain 2, then 5 dc into 2nd chain from hook, fasten off) I attach those to either side. I’ve also been known to embroider around the wings for added detail, as well as French knots to the cheeks or eye area for character.

Owlie pattern

Here is my own version of one of those cute little owls you've seen across blogland, Pinterest, or Ravelry.

Materials:
G hook
small amounts of worsted weight yarn
9mm safety eyes(I've used 12mm too and they look cute too!)
Polyester stuffing
scraps of felt/fabric

To start:
Owl is worked in a continuous spiral, do not join rounds, just count! :-)

Magic circle and then 6sc into center.
Rnd. 1  2sc in each stitch around (12sc)
Rnd. 2  1 sc in next stitch, then 2 sc in next; repeat around until you have 18sc.
Rnd. 3  1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches, then 2sc in next; repeat around until you have 24 sc.
Rnd. 4  1 sc in each of next three stitches, then 2sc in next stitch; repeat around until you have 30 sc.
Rnd. 5 sc dec in first stitch, then sc next 13, sc dec again, then 13 sc.
Rnds.6-18 sc in each stitch around
Rnd. 19 sc dec in first stitch, sc in next 11 sc, then sc dec again sc next 11 stitches
Rnd.20 sc in each stitch around

Before stuffing, decorate the outside of your owlie. This is where every owl really comes to life. I have included several pictures to show just a few of the ideas I have used to embellish each owl. No 2 are ever alike. Some of my ideas include buttons or safety eyes, felt or fabric for wings, felt or yarn for outlining the eyes, embroidery floss for french knots to embellish eyes or wings.

You can see more ideas to embellish your owlies here here, and here.

After you have decorated your owlie, its time to stuff him firmly and pinch together the top seam and I single crochet across the top. I like the seam it gives and then you can pull and shape the sides to make it look like "ears".

Owlies

I have floundered around the last couple of months in my crocheting life. I've hooked a project or two but nothing has really grabbed me. I went in search of inspiration....I went perusing blogs and came across this one...Fiddlesticks. I found these darling little owls here and here on it. Just like her interest was piqued so was mine. Now I am hooked.....literally! Here are my first two and there's a third on my hook as you read, with ideas for more to come!

I leave you a picture of my breakfast this morning. I retrieved the last bag a summer blueberries from the freezer. So warm and satisfying.....I use this recipe here and it hits the spot every time!

Have a superb Saturday!
